Winter Tree Upkeep – How to Care for Trees in Winter

winter upkeep

Spring has indeed sprung, but in the UK the weather has other plans. With Winter still having a firm grasp of our gardens, the bare branches appear to require little maintenance, whereas this is not the case. Our winter gardens still need the same amount of upkeep as they do in any other season. At Ashwood we specialise in sustaining environments, that’s why it is important to understand your winter garden needs. We’ve put together a helpful guide to maintaining your garden this winter.

Many trees are dormant during winter but are still affected by the cold conditions, which can cause damage to young trees and make old ones fragile. Mulch is a great way to protect a trees roots and surrounding soil. Mulch is a material made up of decaying leaves, bark or compost, which enriches and insulates the soil. Surprisingly our recent abundance of snow is the easiest form of mulch for our garden soil, as its completely free, greatly insulates and protects our garden soil.

In snowy and icy conditions, ensure that snow is cleared off tree branches that stretch over footpaths and communal areas.  The longer the snow weighs the branches down, the more fragile and dangerous they become. Remove branches that are damaged and weak as they may be diseased and unsafe, a service we provide. Our garden wildlife needs a helping hand during the cold season. Ensure you have unfrozen water, nuts and seeds for birds, covered to protect the food from the snowfall and harsh winds.

Winter is a great time to carry out necessary work on your trees, a suitable time to carry out cable and bracing work, provided by our arboriculture experts. It is also the perfect time to prune your garden trees, check out our guide to pruning trees in winter in our news section.
