Tree Preservation – Our Guide to Preserved Trees

Preserved trees are not just an important part of our landscape, they make our countryside special, unique and quintessentially British. These trees are usually visible to the public, in streets and parks, adding to the beauty of the natural landscape and making a positive contribution to our scenery.

Tree preservation orders are important to protect the historical value of our trees and our local landscapes. It is vital to acknowledge these, as failure to comply may result in large fines. These orders are there to protect our trees against deliberate damage and destruction, making it an offence to damage these trees in any way.

Often vital work needs to be carried on preserved trees, and that’s where the experts come in. Consult your local council to seek permission and our specialists will carry out the work required, in line with local policy.

Preservation orders are not just decided by local authorities. If you feel that a tree needs to be protected, you can apply to your officials. Whole areas and forestry can also be put under conservation order. Passionate individuals may rally up the community to support the preservation of your local trees, with publicity often comes acknowledgement of how important nature is to your community and the need to support it.

If a tree with a preservation order has been felled, the landowner has a duty to replace the tree, even if the tree is diseased, dying or has become dangerous. You must replace the tree in the same spot, as soon as possible and of the same size and species. The responsibility always lies with the landowner, even if the land is sold.

It is important to note that a preservation order permits the cutting down, lopping, topping, uprooting, willful destruction and wilful damage to trees. Your local authority cannot require maintenance to be carried out on your tree but will recommend and encourage good tree management, which a specialist can provide.
