Tree Surgeon Advice on The Best Trees For Small Gardens

Ashwood Group Tree Surgeon Advice on the Best Tree for Small Gardens

Trees can turn even the even the smallest of spaces into the perfect garden. Choosing the right trees to fit your space is a crucial step towards turning your patch of land into your ideal outdoor space. Read on for tree surgeon advice on the best trees for small gardens.

You may wish to have plenty of trees in your garden, but you don’t want them to grow out of control, swallowing up the limited space you have and blocking all that natural light.

With that in mind we have recommended some small trees that are perfect to plant in a small space:

The Amelanchier Alnifolia ‘Obelisk’ is perfect for a chic garden, that beautifully blossoms in spring and turns golden in the autumn, plus it won’t grow more than 4 metres tall and 1 metre wide. You can also keep the tree in a plant pot, to make it more manageable.

Another great addition is the Liquidambar Styraciflua or ‘Gum Ball,’ which grows 4 metres tall and 2 metres wide. The maple leaves turn beautiful colours in the autumn, giving plenty of colour to your little space. A magnolia plant is another great one, which looks like a proper tree, growing to 3 metres tall and 3 metres wide.

If you want your garden to be a nature hub, then you should consider fruit trees. Berry trees attract nesting birds, plus you’ll have delicious fruit to pick every year.

In a small garden, planting your trees in pots is a great solution to saving space, plus you can swap plants around dependant on your mood or season. Potted trees are also easier to protect during winter and can be brought indoors during particularly cold or windy times.

If you are looking to plant a great British native tree, then you may consider a Hawthorn tree that flower during spring. Small deciduous dogwood trees are another great option, with elliptical leaves that turn golden during autumn.
